For the past 50 years Dr McDonald has explored both historical acupuncture literature and acupuncture research, with particular focus on evidence-based methods of point selection. Dr McDonald commenced studying acupuncture in 1971, practising acupuncture in 1975 and teaching acupuncture in 1977. Dr McDonald has been Dean of Traditional Chinese Medicine at various colleges, a senior lecturer, curriculum developer, and founding President of the Australian Council for Chinese Medicine Education. In recent years Dr McDonald has been engaged in clinical acupuncture research and is currently lecturing at Endeavour College of Natural Health in Queensland, Australia and the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences in Oakland, California. Dr McDonald is also Vice-President for Research for Acupuncture Now Foundation (US) and Chair of Research for Acupuncture Now Australia Ltd.

His publications include Zang Fu Syndromes, The Acupuncture Evidence Project, Acupuncture Point Dynamics and peer-reviewed journal articles on the anti-inflammatory effects of acupuncture, acupuncture mechanisms in allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and problems in acupuncture research.
