Charles Buck


Charles Buck is a veteran UK TCM clinician, educator and author known internationally for his insightful understanding of this medicine and his lucid, engaging communication style. With four decades in the field Charlie’s diverse interests have included acupuncture, classical Chinese medicine, medical sciences, and communications. In this time has developed specialist understandings of dermatology, fertility and oncology from both the biomedical and TCM perspectives.

 

Charlie earned a BSc in physiology at Bristol University and then completed a three-year full time acupuncture study at the International College of Oriental Medicine UK graduating in 1984.

 

Chinese herbs were unknown in the UK at that time but whilst at ICOM he found some some learning resources from the US and China and was fortunate to become one a pioneer of UK CHM practice alongside Maciocia and a few others. Later he studied for two years with Ted Kaptchuk and then completed a clinical internment in Shanghai’s ShugGuang and YueYang hospitals.

 

In 1992 Charlie joined the teaching faculty at the Northern College of Acupuncture where, for over 20 years he took various senior roles including Course Director for the UK’s first college-based CHM training, lecturing posts and working as post-graduate degree supervisor. He was awarded a distinction for his University Master of Science degree in 2000 which reviewed the research into Chinese medicine’s explanatory diagnostic models.

 

Charlie has been honoured with many senior academic roles – including acting as External Examiner for various UK Universities TCM degrees as well as for the Skolen for Akupunktur in Copenhagen where he also taught for many years. More recently he worked on the WHO ICD 11 TCM terminology project.

 

He has been elected to fellowship of all three of the UK’s serious professional registers and served for many years on the British Acupuncture Council’s research committee. He has published extensively and presented at numerous acupuncture conferences and colleges in the UK, EU, US and Australia. 

 

Working for TCM advocacy Charlie also served a term as chair of the lead body the British Acupuncture Council. His textbook Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine – Roots of Modern Practice is an essential read.
